The Islamic Centre of England: A Gathering Place for Shi’as of Different Nationalities

Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimīn Seyed Hashem Moosavi, the Imam of the Islamic Centre of England, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the participation of believers from a range of nationalities in this year’s Ramadan programmes. Addressing hundreds of worshippers from diverse backgrounds, he stated that the Centre takes pride in offering cultural, educational, and social services to all Shi’as—regardless of nationality—with the goal of promoting the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.).

Following congregational prayers, Seyed Moosavi shared an overview of the Centre’s Ramadan offerings. He noted that Shi’ahs residing in London from countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Azerbaijan, Kuwait, Bahrain, African nations, the United Kingdom, India, and even parts of Europe had actively participated in the Centre’s Ramadan events.

The Imam highlighted a range of key programmes, including the nightly recitation of the Holy Qur’an, Duʿā al-Iftitāḥ, Munājāt, and Duʿā Jawshan Kabīr, as well as congregational Maghrib prayers and nightly Iftar gatherings. Suhoor meals were also provided during the Nights of Qadr, alongside multilingual speeches delivered in English, Persian, and Arabic.

Additional activities included mourning ceremonies to commemorate the martyrdom of Amīr al-Muʾminīn Imam Ali (A.S.), special cultural programmes for children with both educational and recreational elements, library access, the celebration of the blessed birth of Imam al-Hasan (A.S.), Qur’an competitions, and charity and donation tables in the Centre’s courtyard. The traditional act of placing the Qur’an over one’s head during the Nights of Qadr was also observed. A notable media feature of the Centre’s Ramadan activity was the Spring of Faith television programme, broadcast during the early hours of dawn.

Hujjat al-Islam Moosavi explained that the Spring of Faith programme—lasting one hour and fifteen minutes—continues a tradition of media production that the Centre has cultivated over the past five years. This year’s edition included expert discussions on the Qur’an, religious rulings, and moral development, as well as spiritual content such as Qur’anic recitations, prayers, animations, and thirty episodes of Hadith of Life. All content was produced in-house and broadcast across the Centre’s social media platforms, drawing considerable engagement from viewers.

As for the Centre’s live media output, Seyed Moosavi shared that the Ramadan broadcast was divided into two segments: the first aired live from one hour before Maghrib until late into the night during the Nights of Qadr; the second began an hour before Fajr and continued for 15 minutes after the call to prayer.

He also expressed appreciation for the community’s contributions toward Iftar and Suhoor provisions, stating that the spirit of generosity extended to charitable donations made in memory of deceased loved ones, with the aim of alleviating the hardships of others.

The Imam commended the active involvement of young people from various nationalities, particularly in the children’s educational programmes held nightly throughout Ramadan. He noted that dozens of children benefited from an hour of structured Qur’anic lessons before Maghrib each evening, led by dedicated instructors.

Finally, he announced that preparations are underway for the hosting of the majestic Eid al-Fitr prayers, marking the blessed conclusion of the holy month.
