The Genesis of Existence: Exploring the Cosmological and Legislative Dimensions of Dahw al-Ardh

Seyed Hashem Moosavi

Introduction

Within the spiritual milestones of the Islamic calendar, we encounter a concept that creates a profound bridge between the physical dimensions of creation and Divine Will. This concept, referred to in Islamic texts as “Dahw al-Ardh,” points to a monumental cosmic event concerning the primordial formation of the Earth. While this event outwardly symbolizes the birth of life on our planet, at a deeper level, it carries an educational and inspiring message for modern human life. Dahw al-Ardh is not merely an “event of the past,” but a “paradigm for the present”, a blueprint for emerging from chaos, attaining stability, and commencing a purposeful life.

What is the Meaning of Dahw al-Ardh?

The term “Dahw” literally means “expanding,” “spreading out,” and “preparing.” This terminology is derived from the 30th verse of Surah An-Nazi’at, where the All-Wise Creator refers to this phenomenon: «وَالأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا، “And after that, He spread out the earth (Dahaha).”

Exegetes of the Holy Quran explain that “Dahw” refers to the expansion of the Earth and its preparation for human habitation. According to Islamic traditions, on the 25th of Dhu al-Qa’dah, the first portion of dry land emerged from beneath the primordial waters at the location where the Kaaba now stands, and from there, the rest of the continents expanded.

Dahw al-Ardh is, in essence, the intersection of metaphysical will (the Divine intent to settle humanity) and physical processes (the structural evolution of the Earth). This event serves as a reminder that the Earth is not a random mass in space, but a “cradle” meticulously “spread out” and designed for human evolution.

On this basis, Dahw al-Ardh can be understood as the inception of Earth’s formation as a substrate for human life; the pivotal moment when the planet transitioned from an unstable, water-covered state into a habitable environment.

The Divine Process: Preparing the Earth Around the Axis of the Ka’aba

Dahw al-Ardh is defined as the expansion of the Earth’s dry land from a central point, situated beneath the Kaaba, transforming the planet into a habitable environment for humanity. In this worldview, the Earth was initially an unstable mass, largely submerged under primordial waters. By Divine Will, the first section of land emerged at a specific coordinate, gradually expanding to create the necessary conditions for the flourishing of life.

What elevates this definition beyond a mere physical description is the “Centrality of the Kaaba” within this process. In Islamic traditions, the Kaaba is introduced not only as the Qibla (direction) of worship but as the “primordial point of emergence” for all dry land. This perspective renders Dahw al-Ardh a two-dimensional truth:

  1. Cosmological: It represents a vital stage in the Earth’s physical preparation for human life.
  2. Spiritual: It signifies a profound bond between the structure of the universe and the axis of Divine guidance.

In other words, Dahw al-Ardh does not simply mean the Earth was expanded; it signifies that the Earth was prepared for purposeful human existence. This planet was designed to be a stage for servitude, growth, and the journey toward perfection. Thus, the fact that this expansion began from the site of the House of God carries a powerful message: human life, from its very inception, finds its meaning around the axis of Monotheism (Tawhid).

Furthermore, in Arabic linguistics, the term “Dahw” carries the connotation of “preparation” and “setting the stage” alongside “expansion.” Consequently, Dahw al-Ardh can be viewed as the Divine orchestration of Earth to receive humanity, a process through which the planet transitioned from a desolate, uninhabitable state into a suitable cradle for civilization and the fulfilment of the purpose of creation.

Some contemporary thinkers have sought to find a horizontal alignment between these religious accounts and scientific findings regarding continental drift and the emergence of landmasses from the oceans. However, the primary objective of sacred texts remains spiritual guidance rather than providing a purely empirical scientific report.

The Philosophy and Significance of Dahw al-Ardh

In Islamic traditions, Dahw al-Ardh is distinguished as one of the four most significant days of the year, with highly recommended acts of devotion such as fasting, prayer, and supplication. But what is the underlying wisdom?

  1. A) The Dawn of Purposeful Life

Dahw al-Ardh marks the inception of “human habitation”, the pivotal moment when the Earth transitioned from an unstable state into an environment prepared for the human presence. However, this presence is not merely for material survival; it is the prelude to a higher calling: “Knowing the Divine and traversing the path of perfection.” As the Holy Quran suggests, human creation is not aimless; it is intrinsically tied to the ultimate goal of servitude (Ubudiyyah) and Divine Gnosis (Ma’rifah).

From this perspective, Dahw al-Ardh can be seen as the “opening of the stage for human trial and growth,” where the Earth becomes a school for spiritual refinement. Everything in this world, from the wonders of nature to human relationships, serves as a tool for the flourishing of man’s spiritual potential. Thus, commemorating this day is a reminder that we did not come here simply to “exist,” but to “evolve” and reach toward the Divine.

  1. B) The Bond Between Earth and Guidance

The fact that the Earth’s expansion is anchored to the Kaaba conveys a profound message: from its very beginning, the planet was defined by the “Axis of Monotheism.” The Kaaba is not merely a site of worship; it is a symbol of God’s centrality in human life. That the first dry land emerged at the site of the House of God indicates that human life must be oriented around Divine guidance from its inception.

This connection teaches us that the separation between “material life” and “spiritual guidance” is an illusion. The Earth was designed from the start for “Monotheistic Living”, a life where work, science, family, and society all find meaning in the pursuit of Divine proximity. Therefore, the Kaaba, as the Qibla, does not just direct our prayers; it sets the orientation for our entire existence.

  1. C) A Reminder of Divine Providence

Dahw al-Ardh is a clear sign of the order, wisdom, and providence inherent in creation. The Earth did not reach its current state through random chance; it was prepared for life through a calculated, stage-by-stage process. This reality directs our attention to the truth that the universe is not the product of “blind accident” but the result of a Wise and Purposeful Will.

Contemplating this Divine Providence has significant transformative effects. When a person realizes the world is governed by Wisdom, their perception of life’s events changes: hardships are no longer seen as meaningless, and successes are not viewed as mere luck. Instead, everything is analysed within the framework of the “Divine System.” Consequently, Dahw al-Ardh does not just commemorate the Earth’s beginning; it reminds us of the “perpetual presence of God’s hand in our lives”, a presence that, when recognized, grants us profound peace, hope, and direction.

The Role of Dahw al-Ardh in Our Modern Life

If we view Dahw al-Ardh merely as a historical event, its impact remains limited. However, if we perceive it as a “Paradigm,” it can become a transformative force in our lives today.

  1. A) Dahw al-Ardh: A Blueprint for Yaqza (Awakening)

In its primordial state, the Earth lacked the stability required for habitation. Dahw al-Ardh was the emergence from this instability and the attainment of “life-readiness”, the transformation of a chaotic environment into a habitable world.

Human life can mirror this exact state. Sometimes, an individual becomes submerged in a sea of heedlessness, repetitive habits, and aimless routines, possessing neither a clear direction nor stable resolve. It is at this juncture that “Yaqza” (Awakening), much like Dahw al-Ardh, marks the beginning of a fundamental revolution.

This event teaches us that awakening means emerging from internal fragmentation to reach a “solid ground of awareness”, a place where one can stand firm, make conscious decisions, and begin the journey of spiritual growth. This awakening is the first step in the spiritual wayfaring (Suluk).

  1. B) Beginning from a Single Point

One of the subtle messages of Dahw al-Ardh is that the vast expansion of the Earth began from a single, small point. This truth illuminates a key principle in personal development: no great transformation happens instantaneously; it always starts from an “Initial Point.”

Many people are deterred from the path of self-reform by an overly idealistic or “all-or-nothing” mindset, believing they must change everything at once. Dahw al-Ardh tells us otherwise: it is enough to choose one right point and begin there.

A single prayer recited with presence of heart, one sincere repentance, a decision to abandon a single vice, or even a small shift in daily behaviour can serve as that “Initial Point.” If sustained, this point will gradually transform the entirety of one’s being, orchestrating an “Internal Dahw al-Ardh.”

  1. C) Hope in the Possibility of Change

One of the most hopeful messages of Dahw al-Ardh is that an unstable and unsuitable initial state can be transformed into an ideal environment for life. The Earth, once covered in water and lacking stability, became the substrate for the flourishing of life and human civilization.

For the modern human, often feeling dead-ended by the complexities of life, psychological pressures, and individual or social crises, this carries a clear message: No situation is the end of the road.

Even if one feels internally collapsed or lost, the possibility of an “Internal Dahw al-Ardh” remains. It is always possible to emerge from such a state to find stability, meaning, and growth. This perspective revives the spirit of hope and movement, rescuing the soul from despair and stagnation. Dahw al-Ardh is, in essence, an invitation to the profound belief that “Change is possible” and “A new beginning is always within reach.”

Devotional Acts and Observances of Dahw al-Ardh

  1. Fasting and the Night Vigil

The day of Dahw al-Ardh is one of the four most distinguished days of the year for fasting, possessing a unique and peerless virtue. According to traditions, fasting on this day carries a reward equivalent to seventy years of fasting, and in other narrations, it is regarded as an expiation for seventy years of sins.

Furthermore, it is stated that for one who fasts this day and spends the preceding night in worship and servitude, the reward of a hundred years of worship shall be recorded. Such is the grandeur of this day that all creatures between the heavens and the earth seek forgiveness for the one who fasts.

Dahw al-Ardh is a day when Divine Mercy descends in an expansive and special manner. Thus, it is considered an invaluable opportunity for prayer, supplication, and gathering for the remembrance of God.

Muhammad bin Abdullah Sayqal narrates: Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) came among us on the 25th of Dhu al-Qi’dah and said: «صوموا؛ فإِنّی أصبَحتُ صائِماً. قُلنا جُعِلنا فِداک، أی یومٍ هُوَ؟ فقالَ یومٌ نُشِرَت فیهِ الرَّحمَةُ، ودُحیت فیهِ الأَرضُ ونُصِبَت فیهِ الکعبَةُ وَهَبَطَ فیهِ آدَمُ علیه السلام؛ “Fast today, for I am fasting as well.” We asked: “May we be sacrificed for you! What day is today?” He replied: “It is the day in which Mercy was spread, the Earth was expanded (Dahw al-Ardh), the Kaaba was established, and Adam (peace be upon him) descended to Earth.”, (Iqbal al-A’mal, Vol. 1, p. 310)

  1. Ritual Bath (Ghusl)

Performing a ritual bath is highly recommended on this day.

  1. The Special Prayer (Salah)

A specific prayer for this day has been narrated in Shi’a liturgical texts, to be performed as follows:

  • Timing: Two units (Rak’ahs) to be performed between sunrise and the time of the noon (Zhuhr) prayer.
  • Recitation: In each unit, after Surah Al-Hamd, recite Surah Al-Shams five times.
  • Post-Prayer Litany: After the final salutations, say: «لا حَوْلَ وَ لا قُوَّةَ إِلا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِی الْعَظِیمِ؛ “There is no power nor strength except in God, the All-High, the All-Great.”
  • Supplication: Then, recite the following: «یا مُقِیلَ الْعَثَرَاتِ أَقِلْنِی عَثْرَتِی یا مُجِیبَ الدَّعَوَاتِ أَجِبْ دَعْوَتِی یا سَامِعَ الْأَصْوَاتِ اسْمَعْ صَوْتِی وَارْحَمْنِی وَ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَیئَاتِی وَ مَا عِنْدِی یا ذَاالْجَلالِ وَالْإِکرَامِ؛ “O He who overlooks lapses, overlook my lapse; O Responder to supplications, respond to my supplication; O Hearer of voices, hear my voice, have mercy on me, and bypass my sins and the wrongs I have committed; O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.”
  1. Pilgrimage (Ziyarah)

The great scholar Mir Damad, in his treatise Risalat Arba’at Ayyam, states that the pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) is the most meritorious of recommended acts and the most emphasized etiquette for this day.

  1. The Special Supplication

A specific supplication for this day is recorded in Sheikh Tusi’s Misbah al-Mutahajjid, the recitation of which is strongly emphasized.

 Conclusion

Dahw al-Ardh is not merely a commemoration of the Earth’s expansion at the dawn of creation; it is a living symbol of a profound and ongoing truth in human existence: that God, through His Wise Providence, both prepared the Earth for life and created humanity to traverse the path of growth, awareness, and perfection. These are two sides of the same reality: the “Substrate” and the “Path.”

The fact that the Earth emerged from restless, unstable waters to reach a state of stability and life-readiness carries a clear message for humanity: an unsettled soul can also reach the shores of tranquillity, and a fragmented heart can attain a point of focus and enlightenment. Just as nature underwent its evolutionary process, the human spirit is capable of its own transcendence.

Furthermore, Dahw al-Ardh teaches us that every great transformation originates from an “Initial Point.” The expansion of the world began from a single coordinate, and the transformation of our lives can begin from a single “Moment of Decision”—a moment when one chooses to step away from heedlessness, redefine their path, and return toward the Divine.

Ultimately, Dahw al-Ardh is not just a date on a calendar, but a “Perpetual Invitation”: An invitation to begin anew, an invitation to reconstruct the “earth” of the heart, and an invitation to move along the path of awakening, meaning, and perfection.
