Imam Khomeini and Christmas in France

During his exile in Neauphle-le-Château, France, in 1978, Imam Khomeini displayed a remarkable sense of humility and respect for his neighbours. Living in a predominantly Christian community, his presence attracted many visitors, journalists, and supporters, which inevitably caused some disruption to the quiet village life. Aware of this, Imam Khomeini wanted to express his gratitude and goodwill to the local residents, particularly during the festive season of Christmas.

To honour the occasion and acknowledge any inconvenience he might have caused, Imam Khomeini arranged for gifts and sweets to be distributed to his neighbours. He also extended warm congratulations on the birth of Jesus Christ, recognising the importance of the holiday for the Christian community. This act of kindness was deeply appreciated by the residents and reflected his commitment to fostering mutual respect and interfaith harmony.

Imam Khomeini was in France as part of his 14-year exile from Iran, which began in 1964 when he was forced to leave the country due to his opposition to the Shah’s regime. He stayed in Neauphle-le-Château from October 1978 to February 1979, using this time to organise and communicate with his followers through the media, making the small village a hub for revolutionary activity. His return to Iran on 1 February 1979 marked a pivotal moment in modern history, as it led to the culmination of the Islamic Revolution and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. This period in France reflects Imam Khomeini’s ability to engage with diverse communities while steadfastly pursuing his mission for justice and reform.
