Call to Apply for ICEL Trustee Membership – 2025

The Islamic Centre of England’s Board of Trustees is in the process of recruiting new members to serve on the board. This exciting opportunity comes at a time when the charity has made significant progress in strengthening its governance, systems, and processes, providing a firm foundation for the next stage of the Centre’s work and continual development in creating a vision and strategy for the future.

The current recruitment process offers a unique opportunity not only to contribute one’s skills and experience, but also to embrace a shared responsibility rooted in faith—building upon previous achievements with sincerity as we work together to serve and benefit our community for generations to come.

Serving in the role is both an honour and a responsibility, reflecting the noble Islamic principle that the well-being of the community is a collective duty. In doing so, trustees facilitate the Centre in fulfilling its mission of guiding the community spiritually and ethically, addressing social and educational needs, and promoting greater understanding and dialogue with wider society.

Individuals who meet the specified requirements are invited to apply for a trustee position by completing the online application form.

We encourage applications from a wide range of individuals and, in particular, welcome applications from those with skills and experience in:

  1. Charity governance, working with voluntary organisations and ensuring compliance.
  2. Financial, accounting and audit work;
  3. Human Resources and Employment law;
  4. Media and Communications, Reputation Management;
  5. Information Governance, GDPR and digital/technology;
  6. Fundraising in community and faith-based charities;

Please note that applicants are required to meet the following Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be a practising Shia Ithna Ashari Muslim.
  • Believe in the principles of Ijtihad and the role of Mujtahid (jurist consults), who provide authoritative rulings on Islamic law.
  • Possess familiarity with Islamic culture and communities in the United Kingdom.
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage positively with the diverse strands of Shia Islam in the UK.
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of relevant community service experience.
  • Exhibit fluency in the English language.
  • Hold the right to reside in the United Kingdom.
  • Maintain no official role with any political party.
  • If applying on the basis that you are a religious scholar:
    1. Provide written confirmation from at least one recognised religious authority (Marja).
    2. Possess at least a master’s degree or an equivalent seminary qualification.
    3. Show a minimum of 10 years of experience in religious and Islamic activities.

Applicants must also agree to abide by the Articles, rules established under the Articles (including those outlined in this document), and the laws and regulations of the United Kingdom, as well as relevant Charity Commission guidance. You must be at least 18 years old (and we do encourage applications from young applicants) and be eligible to act as a charity trustee.
